When Hiring A Licensed Electrician in NYC Matters
Explore Electric is a Local Licensed Electrical Contractor legally operating in Brooklyn NY, Manhattan NY, and Queens NY. "Minor repairs" can be done by a Handyman, or a Unlicensed Electrician.
Understand, any issue that causes sever damage to a property of causes serious life threatening injuries or death will not be covered by Insurace Companies if work was done by a Unlicesed contractor. This is a 100% true.
Often times, the cost of an installation will be similar in price between the Licensed Electrician in Brookly NY, Queens NY, and Manhattan in the residential sector because most repairs don't require pulling permits. Obviously, if a permit needs to be pulled to clear violations or for occupancy needs then the price will change, but this will likely be an expected expense.
There are large Licensed Electrical Contractors and Large Unlicensed Electrical Contractors. Their prices will be similar because of the scope of work desired.
There are small Licensed Electrical Contractors and small Unlicesed Electrical Contractors. Their prices will be similar because of the scope of work desired.
Price will only be a factor based of the size of the Company and their overhead cost. Smaller contractors have less cost, so they are less expensive. It is just that simple!!!
Minor Work needs no Permit
The NYC Administration Code 28-205.4.2 defines Minor and Major Work for all building matters in NYC.
Minor Work. The existing receptacles, lights, garage opener where the box with wires already exist… that is Minor Work. Period! You the homeowner/business owner, by NYC Administrative Code, are legally able to do this on your own if you feel comfortable and competent.
Major Work in most Cases needs a Permit
Major Work is any lighting fixture addition, any electrical box that gives off electricity that will be made inoperable, additional electrical outlet boxes added for new equipment that uses electricity above a certain voltage. Major work may not need a permit but may require that a licensed professional to repair or install the equipment. Major work may also require that a permit be pulled. This is a NYC mandate, basically something you must be aware of as a homeowner/business owner.
In Closing, Please Understand
Obviously, as a professional and a Master Electrician with years of experience in the field, I cannot tell you a homeowner/business owner to disobey codes and mandates set forth by your local jurisdiction.
Understand, that if things are done wrong or something bad happens and damages your home or business, you will be responsible for any damages if local building codes and mandates were not followed. Insurance Companies are looking for any reason NOT to pay out! When there is foul play, the insurance company will more than likely not compensate you.
Realistically, you as the homeowner/business owner who dictates what goes on in your home or business. There are instances where Major Work does not need a permit. Therefore, when you sell or have your home/building inspected, chances are nothing will happen to you or your home/building value. This is all dependent on if you have things done according to NYC Building Codes and was installed/repaired properly with your safety and home/building value in mind. As a Homeowner/business owner, you only know what you know and don’t know what you don’t know so proceed with caution!!!
There is a time and place for the Licensed Professional, the General Contractor, and the hard-working Handyman. Where you utilize these services depend on your comfort level and understanding. Just be aware of the consequences.
